Coming-of-Age Day

2026.01.15miscellaneous

The second Monday of January is Coming-of-Age Day in Japan.

In Yokohama City, a celebration ceremony called “Hatachi no Tsudoi” was held at Yokohama Arena.

Near the venue, at Shin-Yokohama Station, many young people could be seen wearing furisode (special kimono for women) and new suits.

For a long time, the legal age of adulthood in Japan was 20.

In 2022, the law was changed, and now people become adults at the age of 18.

However, even after the law changed, many people still celebrate adulthood at the age of 20.

When you become an adult, you can vote in elections and sign a mobile phone contract by yourself.

However, drinking alcohol and smoking are still only allowed from the age of 20, so please be careful.
