2025.01.17Culture & Seasons

One beverage that people in Japan crave during the winter is amazake. Although the word “酒(sake)” is in the name, this is not wine! A sweet drink that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Suitable for all ages!

Its material is sake lees. Sake lees are the white solid residue left over from the production of sake. It looks a lot like yogurt or cheese, but sake is made from rice, so sake lees are also made from rice. The sake lees are added with water and sugar, stirred and boiled to become amazake.

Although it has a slight taste of alcohol, it can warm the body after drinking it. In winter, it is sold in major shrines and temples. If you have discovered sweet sake, you might as well try it!
